Built by Greg Harrold, Los Angeles. The organ has two manuals, each with a compass of 48 notes (C, D-c''') and a straight pedalboard of 26 notes (C, D-d'). It is built in the style of organs made around 1700 in Ostfriesland, Germany. It is an original creation, however, not copied from any one instrument. The case is lavishly carved and painted. Nineteen independent stops, 1203 pipes. Action: mechanical suspended. tuning: Well-tempered. Pitch: a'=440.

Knee Portatif (1968)

Built by Ahrend and Brunzema (Leer-Loga, Germany), the portatif is a small medieval style instrument tha tis held on one's lap when played. It has one set of flute pipes, a rudimentary chromatic keyboard of 28 notes (d'-f'''), and it is a mechanical action instrument. Its bellows are operated by the left hand of the performer. Since no medieval organs are extant, this instrument was modeled after paintings.

Continuo Organ (1968)

Built by Ahrend and Brunzema, the continuo organ has one manual of 51 keys (C-d'''). It has four stops, 255 pipes and a mechanical sticker action. It is portable and can be moved easily. Tuning: Equal temperament. Pitch: a'=440.

Continuo Organ (1975)

Built by Jürgen Ahrend (Leer-Loga, Germany). This continuo organ, like the other one, has one manual of 51 keys, four stops and a mechanical sticker action. It has only 204 pipes, however, because its zimbel is a one-rank one. It is painted white and decorated in a German Jugendstil. Tuning: Werckmeister II. Pitch: a'=414. It has a transposing keyboard that can be moved to play at a'=440.

Built by Ahrend and Brunzema, the regal consists of one set of reed pipes. It has one manual of 51 keys (C-d'''), and a mechanical sticker action. It has its own motor and blower, but it also has a separate bellows so it can be operated by hand. Tuning: Meantone. Pitch: a'=440.

Organ in the St. Joseph of Arimathea Chapel
(1971, installed 1975)

Built by Jürgen Ahrend, the instrument has 12 stops divided between two manuals and a pedal. It has two interchangeable pedalboards, a standard AGO and a German straight. Manual compass: C-g'''; Pedal: C-f'. Action: Mechanical suspended. Tuning: Werckmeister III. Pitch: a'=440.

Chamber Organ (1980)

Built by Jürgen Ahrend, the chamber organ has eight stops divided between two manuals and a 'pull-down' pedal. Manual compass: 51 notes (C-d'''); Pedal: 27 notes (C-d'). Action: Mechanical suspended. Well-tempered system created by Ahrend. Pitch: a'=440.

Antique Chamber Organ (ca. 1750)

Constructed in the middle of the 18th century by an unknown German builder for the Burg Lauenstein. It arrived in San Francisco in 1928 and was purchased by the University of California in 1957. At that time it was virtually unplayable. In 1976 Jürgen Ahrend rebuilt the metal pipes and in 1979 a complete restoration, including painting, voicing, and tuning, was undertaken by Greg Harrold. The organ has four sets of pipes, three on the manual and one in the pedal. the two sets of pipes and their chests inside the case are a century, perhaps a century-and-a-half older than the case. They may be the oldest pipes and chests in America. Although the case is rococo in style, the sound of the organ has a Renaissance flavor. Compass of the manual: four octaves (C-c'''); Pedal: two octaves (C-c'). Action: Mechanical tracker. Tuning: Meantone. Pitch: approximately a whole step above a'=440.

Antique Italian Organ (ca. 1750)

The organ was constructed for a church near Verona by an unknown builder. The one keyboard has a compass of four octaves (C-c''') with a short octave at the lower end and the pedal a compass from C to a, also with a short octave at the lower end. An electric blower has been installed but the wind can be controlled by the original hand rope pulls. The organ was restored by Bartolomeo Formentelli in 1969 and it came to the University in that year. Action: Mechanical tracker. Present tuning: Equal temperament. Pitch: More than a quarter step above a'=440.

Antique Chamber organ (1783)

The organ was built by Ibe Peters Iben of Emden, Germany for the Castle Onstaborgh in Sauwerd, the Netherlands. Early in the nineteenth century the castle was dismantled and the organ sold to the village inn at Sauwerd. Sometime around 1930 it came into the possession of the organ firm Mulder in Uithuizen and then was sold to a Dr. Bolders, an archeologist at the University of Groningen. About 1960 it landed in an antique shop in Groningen. At that time it was repaired and an electric blower was installed by Johannes Brink of the Mense Ruiter organ company. In its last years in Holland it was place don loan to the Dutch Reformed Church in Appingendam. It was purchased by the University of California in June of 1965.

Iben made small organs of which only a few remain extant. He was an excellent woodworker and he made the cabinet, the windchest and the pipes in the facade. the front sides of the pipes were carved round to resemble metal ones, but the backs are square. Except for a few that have been replaced in recent times, the interior pipes re about a century older than the date on the case, a fact that is responsible for a sound of exceptional historic interest. It was customary for Iben to buy used metal pipes for his organs from a builder named Lohman who had a shop near his.

The organ was restored by Greg Harrold in 1984. Pipes were repaired, revoiced, and tuned. The original bellows were releathered and the pedal for working them restored. The leaking chests and the keyboard were repaired. The deteriorating paint was stripped and the case enameled in an historically traditional manner. The nineteenth century paintings on the doors were cleaned and restored by David Kolch at the Los Angeles County Museum. The molding sof both the inner and outer case have been laid with new gold leaf. The compass of the keyboard is 51 notes (C-d'''). All the ranks of pipe except for the quintadena are divided on two chests, pitches C to b on the lower part of the keyboard to c' to d''' on the upper. The quinteadena is a half-stop and its pipes are only on the upper chest. Tuning: Kirnberger III. Pitch: About one-half step above a'=440.

Spanish-style Organ (1988)
Installed in the Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary Chapel

Built by Greg Harrold, Los Angeles. The organ has one keyboard (compass C-c''') with a short octave at the lower end. In a short octave, the low keys C, C#, D and D# are missing. So are the pipes for the chromatic pitches C#, D#, F#, and G#. As a result, low C is played on the E key, D on F#, and E on G#. The remainder of the low-octave pitches are played on their normal keys and Bb is the chromatic in that octave. The keyboard is split at middle c and c#. All stops on the left side of the console play pitches from low C through middle c. Those on the right play pitches from c# to the top of the board. The manual is permanently coupled ot the pedal and the pedal studs onlyplay C, D, E, F, G, A, Bb, and B. The organ has an electric blower but the wind can be controlled by hand-operated bellows. The instrument is patterened after organs in the province of Zaragoza in the period 1580-1730. Thirteen full stops and four half stops control 1143 pipes. Action: Mechanical suspended. Tuning: Meantone. Pitch: a'=440.
