Performance Program for Music Majors

2-3 units. Repeatable for credit.
A directed program of study that includes opportunities for large and small music ensembles, piano accompaniment, and private instruction that will be at least partially funded by the music department, depending upon the hourly rates charged by each of the private instructors. The student’s program will be worked out in consultation with the supervising faculty, who will assist students in finding an appropriate private instructor.

150A |
Instrumental Performance (David
Milnes) Tuesday and Thursday evenings, and other times TBA. By audition, for experienced performers of orchestral instruments. A directed program of study including participation in University Symphony or other Department-sponsored ensembles, in workshops, and in special projects. Will include instruction and/or coaching, individually or in groups. The student’s program will be worked out in consultation with the faculty in charge of the course. Each student’s studies will lead to some kind of public performance. Audition information. |

Vocal Performance (Marika Kuzma) By audition for experienced vocalists. A comprehensive program of vocal studies including participation in University Choruses, vocal technique training, and ensemble work with other instrumentalists or other vocalists. The student’s program will be worked out in consultation with the faculty in charge of the course. Each student’s studies will lead to some kind of public performance. Students should keep their late afternoons free (after 4 P.M) until their 150 programs are finalized. Audition information. |

Various Musical Practices Performance (Jocelyne
Guilbault- Spring 2008) By consultation. Intermediate or advanced instruction in musical practices not encompassed in 150A,B, or C, within the context of a directed academic program of studies. Students must have experience on the instrument or have studied it in the Music 130 series. The student’s program will be worked out in consultation with the faculty in charge of the course. Jazz and Improvisation (Myra Melford
) By audition. Intermediate or advanced instruction in the performance of jazz and improvisation. A directed program of study including participation in Department-sponsored or UC Jazz ensembles, workshops, and in special projects. Guitar Performance (Myra Melford) By audition, for experienced performers of guitar or related instruments. The program will include ensemble work, such as guitar ensemble, vocal accompaniment and/or chamber music with other instrumentalists, in addition to the study of solo repertoire. Early Music Performance (Davitt
Moroney) By audition, for experienced performers on non-keyboard early music instruments. The program will include ensemble work, such as guitar ensemble, vocal accompaniment and/or chamber music with other instrumentalists, in addition to the study of solo repertoire. The student’s program will be worked out in consultation with the faculty in charge of the course. Each student’s studies will lead to some kind of public performance. |
Application: All students, both those continuing in 150 and those applying for the first time, must submit an on-line application by the Wednesday of the first week of classes.
Enrollment: You will be notified of acceptance into the program via an email from the department office. Upon acceptance, students are to enroll themselves as soon as possible through Telebears.
Individual Program: Supervising faculty (Milnes, Kuzma, Moroney, Brinner, Melford) will work out individual programs with students at the beginning of the semester. Upon receipt of the confirmation email from the Music office, students should contact their teachers immediately to schedule lessons. Students submit a report of activities under the program at the end of each semester, including their participation in any workshops or performances throughout the semester.
Grading: Final grade will be assigned based on the student’s level of participation in ensembles, progress and improvement as demonstrated by performances, and reports by ensemble directors and teachers with whom the student has studied.
Revised performance requirement for the major: Three semester courses from 140-145, 148-149, and 150A-E as part of the 21 units of upper division major electives.
Spring 2008 AUDITION INFORMATION
150A audition information: Incoming students taking the placement exam and other music majors must audition during the University Symphony audition times. Sign up for an audition time on the bulletin board outside room 104 Morrison Hall. If you are also auditioning to play in the orchestra, please see the requirements for orchestra auditions.
150B audition information: Returning Music 150B students do not need to re-audition this semester (do fill out the online application though). New students sign up for an audition time on the special 150B audition sheets on the bulletin board outside room 104 Morrison Hall. The auditions will be held on January 28, 2008 from 5 – 6:30 PM in room 124 Morrison. Prepare a piece of your own choosing. Any song, well-prepared, is acceptable.. Prof. Marika Kuzma (who is on leave this year) will be holding these audtions. An accompanist will be provided.
150C audition information: Auditions for 150C (Keyboard) will be on Wednesday, January 23rd; 10 AM – 12 PM for new students and on Friday, January 25th; 10 AM – 2 PM for all returning music majors . If you can't audition at this time, please contact Professor Moroney. Prepare a piece of your own choosing. For pianists, a piece like a Mozart Piano Sonata, a Bach Prelude and Fugue, or a Chopin Prelude is recommended. You will also be asked to sight read. Sign up for an audition time on the bulletin board outside room 104 Morrison Hall.

150E audition information: Auditions will be held on Monday, January 21, 3-7 PM in room 134 Morrison Hall. Sign up for an audition time on the bulletin board outside room 104 Morrison Hall. Returning students should also sign up for a slot to meet with Prof. Melford to discuss your progress from last semester and your instructor for the Spring 2008 semester. To audition, prepare to improvise on a piece of your choosing and to demonstrate the theoretical knowledge you have on your instruments—scales, modes, chords; you will also be evaluated on recognition of scales and chords (ear) and ability to read music.
