Career Highlights: Alan has performed and/or recorded with: saxaphonists Ernie Watts, Paul McCandless, Bobby Mintzer, Bruce Williamson, John Handy, Jerry Bergonzi and Eddie Harris; trumpeter Bobby Shew; pianists Art Lande, Billy Childs, Kenny Werner, Tom Coster and Kit Walker; bassists Stuart Hamm, Brian Torff, Kai Eckhardt and Gary Brown; guitarists Mick Goodrick, Joyce Cooling; vocalists Kenny Washington, Mark Murphy, Betty Buckley, Rebecca Parris: Cirque Du Soleil’s WINTUK: The San Francisco Production of WICKED: San Francisco’s TEATRO ZINZANNI.

He is currently a member of several groups including The Art Lande, Paul McCandless Group; Ray Brown’s Great Big Band; Dave Eshelman’s Jazz Garden Big Band; Michael Smolens’ Kriya; The Sheldon Brown Group: The Fred Randolph Quintet: The Dan Zemelman Quartet, Nina Ott Trio, Dave Haskell Group

Teaching Highlights: Teaches private and group lessons, ensembles , and workshops at: Cal State University East Bay, Hayward Jazzschool Institute , Berkeley The Jazzschool Community School, Berkeley Musically Minded Academy, Oakland.

He was assistant professor in the percussion department at: Berklee College of Music in Boston from 1986-1993 Where he taught private lessons, classes and ensembles, in addition to helping develop curriculum for the department.

He is author of an article for Percussive Notes magazine, NOV. 1986 and a drum book entitled: “Internalization” A non-reading intensive approach to mastery of the jazz drumming language (www.internalization.net) published 2005.

Community Based Work: Provided scholarships to economically disadvantaged students in my after- school program “Rhythm Rocks!” in Oakland, 2000 to present

Designed and taught a drum class for troubled and disadvantaged youth at Berkeley Youth Alternatives, which culminated in a performance at the family dinner night, 2004

Performed gratis at numerous fundraisers for schools in Oakland including Chabot Elementary, Edna Brewer M.S, Claremont M.S. and Redwood High School in Larkspur, 2001 – 2009

Presented drum and jazz improvisation clinics at Cal State University East Bay Jazz Festival, Canada College (with The Mission Project), Hayward State (with Art Lande and Paul McCandless) 1999-2007

Judge for drum competitions at Guitar Center, El Cerrito, 2006 and 2007

Adjudicated at Jazz festivals/competitions at Cal State University East Bay Jazz Festival at CSUEB, Folsom Jazz Festival at Folsom High School, Pacific Coast Collegiate Jazz Festival at University of California Berkeley, 1999 to present

Worked for the Albany Chamber of Commerce with jazz educator and critic Herb Wong to book musicians for the Solano Stroll in Albany, 2003

Through Bay Area Community Resources, taught after-school drum classes at Claremont Middle School in Oakland, 2003-2005

Performed at two jazz concert series’ for the homeless in San Francisco’s tenderloin district with The John Hammond Quartet (1998) and The Dan Zemelman Quartet, (2006)

Invited to perform at CJEA with The Andre Bush Quartet featuring Art Lande, 2004 Performed at San Francisco Community Music Center with The Mission Project, 1998
