John Kapusta is a Visiting Instructor in the Music Department at Colgate University and a PhD candidate in Music History and Literature at the University of California, Berkeley, where he was supported by a Mellon Discovery Fellowship. His dissertation examines the impact of new practices of self-cultivation on American art music composition, performance, and reception in the long 1970s.

He has presented his research at the annual meeting of the American Musicological Society, the Feminist Theory and Music Conference, and the Biennial International Conference on Nineteenth-Century Music. Also an opera singer, John has appeared as a soloist in major opera houses across the United States, including the Houston Grand Opera, Washington National Opera, and Carnegie Hall (for more on John’s performance activities visit
