The UC Jazz Faculty Ensemble is comprised of some of the finest jazz musicians in the Bay Area, featuring original compositions and arrangements of jazz standards by Moore, including two world premiere compositions. This performance will touch on several aspects of Moore’s composing and arranging styles, including a Latin/Brazilian influence following his residency in Rio de Janeiro and will feature all members of the faculty ensemble.

Faculty members Myra Melford (piano) and Ben Goldberg (clarinet), in collaboration with bassist Michael Formanek (ECM recording artist) and drummer Hamir Atwal (Tune Yards), present original compositions for improvising quartet. An opening set by students in MU165: The Berkeley Nu Jazz Collective, features works by Goldberg, Formanek, Melford and others.

The Berkeley Nu Jazz Collective is an advanced small ensemble of improvisers exploring a range of repertoire including music by innovative jazz composers of the 1960s – today, as well as original student compositions and arrangements, through both conventional and experimental practices.

THE JAZZ AND IMPROVISED MUSIC INITIATIVE (JIM), under the direction of Myra Melford, was created by and for UC Berkeley music students. Its primary purpose is to support studies in jazz and contemporary improvisational music.
