Dan Levitan

Dan Levitan holds contracts as the Principal Harpist with four professional orchestras: Santa Rosa Symphony, Marin Symphony, Symphony Silicon Valley (orchestra formed in place of the San Jose Symphony), and the San Jose Ballet.

Most recently, Dan is having the privilege of rehearsing/performing with the San Francisco Ballet Orchestra during their 2012-13 season. Dan has served as the “first call” harpist with the San Francisco Opera since August 2008; he recently completed performances of Tosca November/December 2012; he completed performances of Puccini’s Turandot the fall of 2011, as well, as performances of Wagner’s entire Ring Cycle, June/July 2011.

Dan is looking forward to participating “full time” in the upcoming July 2013 season of the Carmel-Bach Festival. He had the pleasure and privilege of rehearsing/performing in the inaugural season of the newly selected music director/conductor with the Carmel-Bach Festival, July 2011. With the California Symphony, as the Acting Principal Harpist, he began his sixth consecutive season.

He regularly performs for the San Jose Chamber, Mission Chamber, UC Berkeley Symphony orchestras.  He is sought after by numerous other orchestras, choirs, and ensembles.

As a soloist: In this current 2012-13 season, Dan will perform a solo concert for the Thursday Musical Club in Marin County as well as Sunnyvale Presbyterian Church. During the past 2011-12 season, he performed: solo recitals for the Sonora Bach Festival and St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church Concert Series in Danville receiving a standing ovation for both, and performed the Mozart Flute and Harp Concerto w/Philharmonia Healdsburg. During the 2010/2011 season he performed Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez with the Mission Chamber Orchestra, the Ravel Introduction & Allegro with the St. Peter’s Chamber Orchestra. And with the San Jose Chamber Orchestra, he performed Frank Martin’s Petite Symphonie Concertante for Harp, Harpishord, & Piano with string orchestra accompaniment as well as the 3rd & 4th movements of the Harp Concerto he commissioned Craig Bohmler to compose.

As a teacher and coach: he was appointed the harp instructor at Sonoma State University and UC Berkeley. He coaches for Young People’s Symphony (Berkeley) as well as California Youth Symphony (mid-peninsula and south bay).

Dan is featured in several commercial recordings including Benjamin Britten’s A Ceremony of Carols for Chorus and Solo Harp, Claude Debussy’s Trio for flute, viola, and harp, works by Lou Harrison, and numerous television and film recordings.
