Information for Returning and Potential Singers

Audition information is for Fall 2026 only. Please check back in early/mid-January for Spring 2027 auditions.

Membership in Chamber Chorus and University Chorus is by audition only, and is open to UC Berkeley students as well as community members. Auditions are held every fall and spring at the beginning of the semester. (Note: Golden Bear Voices is on hiatus for 2026-2027.)

Returning 2025-2026 Members ONLY: Complete all steps here and check if you need to re-audition. 

ALL new members and those who skipped all of the 25-26 academic year must audition in person 8/26~8/28.

Before the Audition:

  1. Read ALL info carefully in this Info Packet

  2. Fill out an audition form here

  3. Sign up for a time slot (no walk-ins allowed—you will be redirected to a sign-up sheet upon submission of the audition form).

  4. If also auditioning for 167B, 168B, or 168F: Submit the Music Department Private Lesson Application form found on their website - due Fri. 8/28.

Auditions (held Wed. 8/26 to Fri. 8/28):

  • Auditions are held in-person in Morrison Hall, room TBA (follow building signs on day of).

  • Arrive at least 5 minutes before your audition time.

  • Each audition will last around 10 minutes. Singers will be asked to:

    • Vocalize and sing scales with the director to demonstrate their range.

    • Sight-read one or more short musical excerpts to determine musical ear and sight-reading skills.

    • Chamber Chorus and Music 167B/168B/168F ONLY: Perform a prepared song (Ex: aria, art song, folk song, hymn, or other appropriate selection) of your choice. It can be a cappella, with accompaniment, or with a track. An accompanist will be provided.

      • Bring 2 extra copies of the sheet music. If you are using a track, also bring whatever you need (device, portable speaker, etc.)

      • The piece does not have to be memorized.

  • If you are absolutely unable to audition during 8/26-8/28, please email the Program Manager, Jennifer Liu (jenliu2@berkeley.edu).

  • NOTE for University Chorus auditionees only: Based on your audition, we may require you to also enroll in Music 14 (Vocal Technique Class, Wed. 5-6PM) in order to participate in the chorus. See Info Packet to learn more about Music 14.

After the Audition:

  • Results for choir will be emailed and posted on the main floor Morrison bulletin board by 2PM on Tues. 9/1 latest. 

  • Results for 167B, 168B, and 168F will be emailed from the Music Department on around Fri. 9/4. (Note: This is a separate process.)

NOTE: Due to auditions, rehearsals start on Tues. 9/1: 

Chamber Chorus: Tues. 9/1, 3:00PM (Hertz Hall)

University Chorus: Tues. 9/1, 5:00PM (Hertz Hall)

  • First sectional: Wed. 9/2, 4:00PM (Morrison Rms. 124 & 125). Sectionals are REQUIRED for UChorus - this is a 1-hour rehearsal split into 2 groups.
