About Performance Ensembles

Unique to Cal’s Department of Music among the great music departments in the country is the degree to which performance experience and study is integrated into every aspect of the academic program. Whether honing musicianship skills, acquiring musical knowledge of diverse cultures and traditions, studying the history and literature of European music or contemporary music from around the world, students in the Department of Music are continually immersed in musical practice, giving them hands-on expertise in the field.

Music majors must enroll in at least three semesters of performance from the 140 or 168 series. Undergraduate and graduate students receive rich performance experience by participating in one of the department’s ensembles, which include but are not limited to the following opportunities:

  • Performing at evening and weekend concerts
  • Performing in noon concerts
  • Audition and perform a concerto with the University of California Berkeley Symphony Orchestra
  • Performing in concerts for the Berkeley Undergraduate Composers Club
  • Performing at CNMAT, Wu Hall, or other campus venues.
