Information for Returning and Potential Singers

Audition Information Spring 2022 (for University Chorus, Chamber Chorus, Golden Bear Voices, and Music 167B/168B only):

NOTE: Changes have been made to accommodate online classes for the first 2 weeks of instruction.

Auditions will be held in person January 30, 2022 – February 1, 2022.

  • Sun. 1/30, 11am-6pm – Morrison 125
  • Mon. 1/31, 11am-6pm – Morrison 125
  • Tues. 2/1, 2:30pm-6pm – Morrison 125

To sign up for an audition, please fill out the Choir Audition Form (no walk-ins allowed). You must submit a form to audition – you will be re-directed to sign up for a time slot after your submission. All audition requirements are at the bottom of this page. We will not hold any auditions after February 1 – no new members will be accepted after this deadline, regardless if you’re enrolled.

  • The following members will need to re-audition in person:
    • All returning Fall 2021 sopranos of University Chorus
    • Returning Fall 2021 University Chorus members who wish to join Golden Bear Voices and/or Chamber Chorus
    • Returning Spring 2021 or earlier University and Chamber Chorus members
    • All returning members who wish to switch voice parts in their ensemble
  • The following members do not need to re-audition, if none of the above apply:
    • Returning Fall 2021 Chamber Chorus members
      • This includes those who are interested in Golden Bear Voices
    • Returning Fall 2021 altos, tenors, and basses of University Chorus
      • If you would like to continue or join Music 14 (vocal technique class) – please contact Jennifer Liu at jenliu2@berkeley.edu.
    • Returning 168B members from Fall 2021
  • [Update 1/28/22 – The deadline for 167B and 168B lessons have passed. Lessons have already been finalized, so no additional videos will be accepted. Audition signups will only be for participating in University Chorus, Golden Bear Voices, and Chamber Chorus.] The following members need to submit a video recording of a prepared song by Friday, January 21:
    • Returning Fall 2021 members who are:
      • New to Music 168B
      • New or returning to Music 167B
      • If you do not need to re-audition for any other reason (listed above), this video replaces your audition
      • If you need to re-audition for other reasons:
        • You will also need to sign up for an audition slot
        • Please plan on performing your song again in person at your audition
    • All new and returning Spring 2021 (or earlier) members interested in Music 167B or 168B
      • NOTE: An in-person audition is also required. Please plan on performing your song again in person at your audition.
      • See “Private Voice Lesson Program” section below.
    • Video Requirements:
      • Record a video (mp4 or mov format) and upload it here by Friday, January 21.
      • File name: “Last_First_Song Name_Composer_Date of Recording”
      • We should be able to see you and hear your voice clearly
      • You can sing a cappella or use a track without other vocals
      • No videos of previous performances, so that it is the most current reflection of your voice
    • Prepared Song – see “Audition Description” section at the bottom for accepted songs

Due to auditions, there will be no rehearsals the first 2 weeks of instruction. Rehearsals start February 2. Audition results will be emailed and posted on the main floor Morrison bulletin board by 4pm on February 2 – please wait until then before inquiring.

Ensemble Information:

  • Chamber Chorus (Music 145)first rehearsal on Wed. 2/2, Hertz Hall
  • University Chorus (Music 144)first rehearsal on Thurs. 2/3, Hertz Hall (no sectionals on Wed. 2/2)
    • NOTE: Please read the information under “Vocal Technique Class (Music 14)”, as this is an additional course we may require some members to take in order to join. We may also offer this to select University Chorus members in lieu of Music 167B for voice lessons.
  • Golden Bear Voices (treble chorus, associated with University Chorus) – first rehearsal TBA (after first week of February), Morrison 250

Private Voice Lesson Program (Music 168B and Music 167B):

  • To qualify for private lessons, you must participate in either University or Chamber Chorus.
  • Students interested in participating in Music 168B (voice lessons for music majors) and Music 167B (lessons for non-music majors) should sign up for an audition slot. Please read the information about the 168B and 167B program before you audition.
  • Audition requirements are listed below.
  • Important: ALL members, both new and returning, need to fill out this 167/168 online application by Wednesday, January 19.
    • Note: Those interested in Music 167B must submit this form to be considered. Filling out the form and placing into University or Chamber Chorus does not guarantee lessons (even if you have received them in previous semesters), as spots are limited. An email will be sent out by Friday, February 4 if you are accepted into the lesson program.

Golden Bear Voices:

  • To be considered, you must participate in either University or Chamber Chorus.
    • Note: Placing into either chorus does not guarantee membership in the treble chorus, as spots are limited.
  • Interested members, please read ALL info under “Golden Bear Voices” section HERE.
  • Audition requirements are listed below.

University Chorus:

Audition Description:

  • Each audition will last 10 minutes. Singers will be asked to:
    • Vocalize and sing scales with the director to demonstrate their range.
    • Sight-read one or more short musical excerpts to determine musical ear and sight-reading skills.
  • Please arrive 5 minutes before your audition time.
  • If you are absolutely unable to audition before the first rehearsal, please email Jennifer Liu at jenliu2@berkeley.edu. February 1st is the hard deadline to audition.
  • NOTE: Based on your audition, we may require you to also enroll in Music 14 (vocal technique class, W 5-6pm) in order to participate in the chorus. More info about the course here.
    • We may also offer this to select University Chorus members as free lessons, in lieu of Music 167B.

Chamber Chorus and Golden Bear Voices:

For Golden Bear Voices – regardless if you wish to participate in University Chorus or Chamber Chorus, please follow these audition requirements below.

For 167B/168B members – please see the “Video Requirement” at the top of this page for an additional video upload due January 21. [Update 1/28/22 – All lessons have been finalized. No additional videos will be accepted.]

Audition Description:

  • Each audition will last 10 minutes. Singers will be asked to:
    • Vocalize and sing scales with the director to demonstrate their range.
    • Sight-read one or more short musical excerpts to determine musical ear and sight-reading skills.
    • Perform a prepared song (aria, art song, folk song, hymn, or other appropriate selection) of your choice, either with accompaniment or a cappella. An accompanist will be provided. Bring 3 copies of the sheet music.
  • Please arrive 5 minutes before your audition time.
  • If you are absolutely unable to audition before the first rehearsal, please email Jennifer Liu at jenliu2@berkeley.edu. NOTE: February 1st is the hard deadline to audition.

COVID Safety:

  • We are following UC Berkeley COVID guidelines, so please wear a mask during your audition.
  • For rehearsals (subject to change with school requirements):
    • Masks indoors at all times
    • Proof of vaccination
    • Green campus access badge
      • For community members, a green daily symptom screener before you arrive on campus each day will substitute a green access badge.
