Myra Melford, Professor of Composition and Improvisational Practices in the Department of Music, has been named the 2025 Composer of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association (JJA).
Professor Melford—a celebrated pianist and bandleader—has a prolific performing career, with over 40 recordings, including more than 20 as a leader or co-leader, under her belt. This expertise has been passed along to Professor Melford’s students in her classes on contemporary jazz, improvisation-based music and composition for undergraduate and graduate performers and composers.
The Music Department is proud to see Professor Melford’s work recognized by the JJA and congratulates her on this well-deserved award!
