The Latin American and Carribean Music Ensemble is open to students enrolled at UC Berkeley by invitation and through auditions.

The expectation for this ensemble is multiple performances each semester.

Description & History

This ensemble introduces students to a wide range of musics of Latin American and the Caribbean. The specific genres to be studied will change each semester. Tapping into the rich genealogy of musics performed by tropical orchestras through the Americas and the Caribbean through the 20th and 21st centuries, this practice-based course provides music students with the experience of being part of a professional orchestra through score reading, rehearsals, performance, and recording. Participation is by invitation or audition.

The ensemble will draw from a number of Latin American and Caribbean musics, including Cumbia, Merengue, Salsa, Mambo, Danzón, and more. Together, the Latin American and Caribbean Music Ensemble will explore the work of classic as well as contemporary composers, musicians, and bands. Members will receive a comprehensive survey of the rich musical genealogies practiced throughout these regions.

Auditions

Audition times and requirements are still being determined. Details will be released once an instructor is hired for the course. In the meantime, to join the list for potential members in the ensemble, contact ensemble director Juan David Rubio Restrepo at juanrubio@berkeley.edu.
