The Department of Music is pleased to announce that Mary Ann Smart, Professor of Musicology, is a recipient of the 2025 Berkeley Faculty Service Award (BFSA). Each year the BFSA honors two members of the Berkeley Division of the Academic Senate who have contributed through outstanding service to the campus as an educational institution and community of scholars.
Professor Smart’s contributions to the campus are certainly worthy of the award. In 2022-23 Smart served as Chair of the Berkeley Division of the Academic Senate, and in 2019-20 she chaired the Committee on Budget and Interdepartmental Relations (colloquially known as “the Budget Committee”). Other campus service roles include co-chairing the Editorial Committee of the University of California Press and membership on the senate’s Committees on Courses of Instruction, Research, and Educational Policy (now the Undergraduate Council). These positions are in addition to Professor Smart’s service to the Department of Music, which has included chairing the Graduate Committee and the Racial Equity Taskforce (2020-21). Speaking on her colleague’s accomplishments, Musicology Professor Emily Zazulia said, “Even as she has taken on this university service, Mary Ann has remained committed to the students in our department, reliably showing up for student events, giving her all to her undergraduate courses, and remaining one of our most dedicated—and beloved—PhD advisers.”
Reflecting on the recognition, Professor Smart said “I’m deeply touched and flattered to receive this award. The activities recognized by the award have felt to me not like ‘service’ in any conventional sense, but have been a chance to get to know brilliant and passionate colleagues from many fields, to think creatively about how to make this campus better, and to play a role in shaping how we approach research and teaching at Berkeley.”
Again, we at the Department of Music would like to offer our heartfelt gratitude to Professor Smart for her countless contributions to the Department of Music and to the entire UC Berkeley campus.
