UCBSO Closes Season with Two Sold Out Performances of the Lim Fantasy of Companionship

December 30, 2025

Over the course of three concerts in the Fall of 2025, the UC Berkeley Symphony Orchestra demonstrated a remarkable wealth of talent through a curriculum of engaged, diverse programming. What began with the distinct Americana of Copland and the grandeur of Beethoven evolved into a spectacular season finale on December 5th and 6th. Over two sold out nights, the orchestra performed Holst’s The Planets, John Williams’ Score for Star Wars, and Manu Martin’s Lim Fantasy of Companionship.

Created by Dr. Susan Lim and Dr. Christina Teenz Tan (UC Berkeley Alumni, ‘14) and composed by Manu Martin, the Lim Fantasy of Companionship is in part a recollection of Tan’s time at Berkeley. Utilizing the full complement of the UC Berkeley Symphony Orchestra and University Chorus, the Lim Fantasy of Companionship also featured a full rock band, a pianist, and a vocal soloist for each night. Through a tender, evolving dialogue between the solo piano and the swelling orchestra, the music captured a narrative of isolation transforming into the warmth of genuine connection. The piece was a hit with the attendees, receiving a long standing ovation on each of the sold out nights.
