Born in Bogotá, Colombia, Juliana is an oboist, chamber and orchestra musician, and improviser. She has performed with the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Colombia, Orquesta Sinfónica Juvenil de Colombia, and the Ópera al Parque Festival in Colombia. Since moving to the US, she has performed with La Jolla Symphony and Chorus, Meridian Symphony Orchestra, Redlands Symphony, and Gulf Coast Symphony Orchestra. Juliana has participated in Contemporary music festivals and ensembles including the Academia Cervantina in Guanajuato, Mexico, and Vértice Ensemble in Mexico City. In 2020, she performed virtually with the Festival Mujeres en la Música Nueva at the <In/Out> festival and COINCIDENCIA Swiss and South America cultural exchange and participated in the most recent Ensemble Evolution Summer program in New York City.
As an active improviser, she explores the sonic possibilities of the oboe and English horn by expanding a performative language and experimenting with the reactionary and unexpected dynamics of improvisation. In duo with Mexican singer, Mariana Flores, their ongoing project queries the soundscapes of Latinamerican popular canciones of the mid-twentieth century.
Before moving to the Bay area, Juliana was the oboe professor at the University of Texas, El Paso.
Currently, Juliana is a doctoral candidate in Contemporary Music Oboe Performance at the University of California, San Diego.
