Description and History
The UC Berkeley Wind Ensemble (UCBWE) is offered for the study and performance of contemporary and traditional wind band repertoire. Membership is attained through audition. Registered students in good standing who complete 3 semesters within a 4-semester period are exempt from further auditions. This course is offered every fall and spring semester and may be repeated for full credit. Generally, the UCBWE performs two evening/weekend concerts as well as one Noon Concert in Hertz Hall each semester.
The UCBWE’s history at Cal dates back to before the 1930s, when the group (then known as the Concert Band) was directed by Charles Cushing. In 1950, James Berdahl assumed directorship and remained until his retirement in the late 1970s. The UCBWE was revived when Robert Calonico took over as Director of Bands in 1995.
Participation & Enrollment
Admission to the UCBWE is granted by audition only. Auditions are open to just about anyone — UC Berkeley students, alumni, faculty and staff, as well as local residents and non-affiliated students. Please note, however, that registered Berkeley students will be prioritized if/when space becomes limited. Admitted students are expected to enroll in Music 142 for credit; exceptions may be reviewed on an individual basis. Regular attendance at weekly rehearsals and participation in all public performances is required. Auditions take place at the beginning of each fall and spring semester.
Auditions
A wealthy mix of musical backgrounds, artistic capabilities, technical specialties, and cultural resources gives the UCBWE its strength and flexibility. Auditions are designed to place players within sections and maximize balance in ways that best benefit the entire ensemble. All interested players are encouraged to use the audition process as a learning experience and showcase their best abilities. In other words, one should not allow any perceived inabilities or deficiencies to discourage them from auditioning.
