About the Department of Music

Since 1905 Berkeley’s Department of Music has made a difference in the lives of students by providing a diverse body of study taught by world-class faculty. Today the department comprises an instructional program with roughly 160 majors and 65 graduate students taught by 18 full-time faculty and more than 75 lecturers, private instructors, and specialists. The department also boasts a roster of distinguished Bay Area artists offering individual musical instruction, a treasured collection of classical instruments, as well as four buildings: Hertz Concert Hall, the Jean Gray Hargrove Music Library, the Center for New Music and Audio Technology, and Morrison Hall.

Through these resources the department sustains and increases opportunities for musical experience and performance study for students. The Performance ensembles offered through the department provide students the discipline and joy of experiencing music with other musicians, while also reflecting the diverse body of study offered by the department. Aided by generous public support, the department offers the following professional-caliber ensembles for students:

  • African Music Ensemble
  • Balinese Gamelan
  • Baroque Ensemble
  • Chamber Chorus
  • Chorus
  • Contemporary Improvised Music
  • Gospel Chorus
  • Javanese Gamelan
  • Jazz
  • New Music at Berkeley – graduate composition student concerts
  • Symphony Orchestra

The Music Department relies on alumni and community donations to sustain these programs and create student opportunities. Charitable contributions offer an opportunity to support the mission of the department and UC Berkeley in a way that reflects your own passions and objectives.
