UCBWE Audition Page

A mix of musical backgrounds, artistic capabilities, technical specialties, and cultural upbringings gives the UCBWE its strength and flexibility. Auditions are designed to place players within sections and maximize balance among them in ways that most benefit the entire ensemble. All interested players are encouraged to showcase their best abilities and use the audition process as a learning experience. Do not allow any perceived inabilities to discourage you from auditioning. If you would like help or guidance with preparing your audition, you are welcome to contact the instructor.

Description and History

UBE performing in 2018

The UC Berkeley Wind Ensemble is offered for the performance and study of contemporary and traditional wind band repertoire. The UCBWE’s long history at Cal dates back to before the 1930s, when the group (then known as the Concert Band) was directed by Charles Cushing. In 1950, James Berdahl assumed the directorship and remained until the late 1970s. The UCBWE was revived when Robert Calonico took over as Director of Bands in 1995. The group performs regularly on campus and beyond, including at least twice per semester in Hertz Hall.

Wind Ensemble I meets every fall and spring semester. Membership is attained by audition only. Spring auditions may be waived for those who were admitted in the fall. WE I performs at least two evening and/or weekend concerts in Hertz Hall each semester, as well as one noon concert. WE I members may enroll in WE II on a secondary instrument with instructor approval. Students who audition for WE I but are not accepted are strongly encouraged to enroll in WE II.

Wind Ensemble II meets during spring semesters only. While membership is open to all, an audition is still required for part assignments. You may audition for Wind Ensemble I & II simultaneously. WE II performs at least two evening and/or weekend concerts in Hertz Hall.

Participation & Enrollment Information

Admission to the UCBWE is by audition only. Admission is open to everyone – UC Berkeley students, alumni, faculty, staff, affiliates, and unaffiliated community members alike. Current students who are admitted are expected to enroll in Music 142 for credit; exceptions will be reviewed on an individual basis. Regular attendance at weekly rehearsals and participation in all public performances is required. Auditions take place at the beginning of each fall and spring semester.
