    Gospel Choir and Carillon mark 50 years since MLK’s death

    The UC Berkeley Department of Music will honor the 50-year mark of Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination on April 4, 2018 with performances by student carillonist Leslie Chan and the University Gospel Chorus directed by D. Mark Wilson.

    Since the Black Consciousness Movement of the 1970s, Gospel Music has been made on the UCB campus and this year, we celebrate the 10th anniversary of Dr. D. Mark Wilson’s leadership of this extraordinary ensemble in the UCB Music Department. Join us for a Family Reunion, as we walk down memory lane and reconnect with former Chorus members who will join us for an evening of singing and reminiscing.

    “Singing with the Saints: An Interpretation of Dia De Los Muertos in Gospel Songs”
    With this week’s recognition of the Day of the Dead and Halloween, The UCB Gospel Chorus shares a concert of gospel music recognizing saints, ancestors, and divine beings like angels whose memories and music bring strength to everyday life.
    You are invited not only to sing with those you call saints, but also to walk the “Second Line” in the New Orleans tradition of singing “O When the Saints Go Marching In.”

    Often identified as the father of the modern and contemporary gospel music, this post-Thanksgiving concert pays tribute to this musical genius whose genre of modern and contemporary gospel will continue on even after his passing earlier this year in January 2015.
